Master Thesis-Gas Turbine Compressor Research
Master thesis- Gas Turbine Compressor Research
A Snapshot of Your Day
As an intern in gas turbine axial compressors, you will work on an exciting project aimed at investigating how a representative medium gas turbine transonic compressor blade can be scaled to fit the rotating test rig at the New Whittle Laboratory at Cambridge University. You will:
Engage in meaningful projects focusing on the aerodynamic, structural, and aeroelastic properties of compressor blades.Work in a team culture that values collaboration and innovation, where you are encouraged to ask questions and contribute your ideas.Impact the team and our customers by contributing to the development of new testing facilities relevant to Siemens Energy’s goals of reducing carbon footprints.
How You’ll Make An Impact
Conduct a comprehensive literature review to explore compressor test rig design and scaling.Develop CFD and FEM models to numerically estimate the relevance of scaled designs.Perform a parametric study to assess the trade-offs between aerodynamics, structural dynamics, and aeroelasticity.Analyze the NCCP rotating rig design and the scope of required hardware modifications.Prepare a comprehensive technical report detailing methodology, results, and conclusions, and deliver a presentation to facilitate discussion and critical evaluation of the outcomes.
What You Bring
M.Sc. student in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, engineering physics, or similar.Experience and interest in using CFD tools (e.g., CFX, STAR-CCM+, TRACE).Programming skills in Python and/or MATLAB.Experience with solid mechanics, structural dynamics, and FEM is an advantage.Ability to work independently, but not afraid to ask questions to move forward in your work.Structured and clear communicator with an interest in turbomachinery and aeroelasticity.
About The Team
You will be working in a dynamic team of passionate engineers and researchers striving to develop innovative solutions in turbomachinery. The team consists of about 10 individuals who collaborate closely to achieve common goals and create a positive work environment.
Within the Gas Services division, we offer energy solutions with zero or low emissions based on our gas turbines, all under one roof, along with steam turbines and generators. Through service, modernization, and digitalization of the delivered fleet, we create opportunities for a reduced climate footprint.
We can offer you attractive employment benefits such as reduced working hours, advance vacation, wellness grants, and possibly flexible workplace options.
