Senior Software Engineer
Senior Backend EngineerStockholm, Södermalm | Contract or Permanent | Go / AWS About the CompanyWe're representing a well-backed energy technology startup based in Stockholm, building software that connects and optimises distributed energy assets, including solar installations, electric vehicle chargers and battery storage. Its API-driven platform helps enterprise energy customers coordinate connected assets and improve how energy infrastructure is managed. The business is led by experienced technology entrepreneurs and has an established engineering team working across backend development, data engineering and optimisation. The OpportunityThe company is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join a small, experienced engineering team and take ownership of backend services, APIs and integrations. This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving problems independently, making pragmatic technical decisions and taking responsibility for delivering reliable production software. You'll work closely with backend engineers and data specialists, with the opportunity to influence technical decisions and contribute directly to the evolution of the platform. The team values engineering judgement, curiosity and a track record of getting things done more highly than experience with any particular programming language. Both permanent employment and a contract engagement of up to 12 months are being considered. What You'll Be DoingDesign, build and maintain backend services and APIs.Develop integrations with third-party systems and connected energy assets.Take ownership of technical problems from initial investigation through implementation, deployment and ongoing maintenance.Contribute to architectural decisions and help improve the reliability and maintainability of production systems.Monitor services, investigate issues, improve observability and ensure operational documentation is maintained.Collaborate closely with backend engineers and data engineering colleagues.Work across traditional engineering boundaries when needed to solve problems effectively.Identify opportunities to simplify systems, improve performance and make the platform more robust.Take responsibility for delivery without relying on layers of supervision or project management. What We're Looking ForWe're interested in engineers who combine strong technical ability with independence, curiosity and a practical approach to problem-solving. You'll ideally bring:Solid professional experience in backend software engineering.A track record of delivering production software and taking ownership beyond implementation.Strong understanding of APIs, databases, service architecture and software integration.Experience building, deploying and maintaining cloud-based applications. The ability to investigate unfamiliar problems and make sound technical decisions independently.A proactive approach to monitoring, troubleshooting, documentation and continuous improvement.Clear communication and the ability to collaborate effectively in a small engineering team.A willingness to learn new technologies and work beyond narrowly defined responsibilities when necessary.Professional fluency in English. We expect this role to suit an experienced senior engineer, but we won't rule out someone with fewer years of experience who can demonstrate exceptional independence and end-to-end ownership. Technology and Engineering Environment The primary backend stack includes:Go for backend development.AWS, including Lambda, RDS and IoT Core.APIs and third-party integrations.MQTT and connected-device communication. The wider engineering environment includes Python, GCP, data engineering and machine-learning-based optimisation. Experience with Go and AWS is advantageous, but not essential. Strong backend engineers from other technology stacks are encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate transferable skills and a willingness to learn. The Engineering CultureThe team is small, collaborative and hands-on. Engineers have meaningful responsibility and work directly with colleagues across backend and data disciplines. The culture is informal, with plenty of humour and open discussion. People are expected to take ownership, communicate honestly, support one another and approach technical problems with curiosity. This environment will suit someone who enjoys autonomy, variety and being accountable for the quality of what they deliver. Location and Working ModelThe role is based in Södermalm, Stockholm, with a primarily office-based working arrangement of five days per week. Some flexibility may be possible when circumstances require it. Interview ProcessThe process is designed to assess practical engineering ability, personal ownership and team fit. Candidates will be asked to provide a CV alongside a short written response to the following question: What is the project you are most proud of, why, what was your role in it, and what made it challenging? This response is an important part of the initial assessment. Successful candidates will then progress to conversations covering their technical experience, problem-solving approach and collaboration with the engineering team. An in-person meeting in Stockholm is expected as part of the process. The final interview stages will be confirmed with shortlisted candidates. Interested? If you're a backend engineer who enjoys solving meaningful technical problems, working autonomously and taking responsibility for production software, we'd welcome a confidential conversation. Please get in touch with your CV and a brief description of a project you're particularly proud of.
