Staff Scientist in Atmospheric Optical Remote Sensing

About The Role

As a Staff Scientist, you will become part of a professional research environment where your specialist competence contributes to the quality and continuity of ongoing scientific work. In this role, you are expected to support research activities with your expertise and to work closely with colleagues and research leaders to help maintain and support the development of the research environment.

The position focuses on the operation, development, and scientific exploitation of atmospheric remote-sensing research infrastructures within the division, with a central focus on the long-term operation of the high-resolution solar FTIR stations at Harestua (Norway) and Onsala (Sweden). Another aspect of the position is also to contribute to the continuity and further development of the research infrastructure, including the division's research computing environment and collaboration with national and international partners.

About The Division And Department

The Department of Environmental and Energy Sciences consists of five research divisions, with the common goal of providing excellent research that can enable solutions for transition to a sustainable society. The department offers a dynamic and inspiring academic environment, and well-developed networks with industry and relevant public stakeholders at national, international and global levels.

The Division of Geoscience and Remote Sensing conducts research, education, and utilization within a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines, including ground-based, airborne and satellite measurements, as well as numerical modeling and data analysis of various climate parameters. The division operates ground-based atmospheric observation infrastructures, including the high-resolution solar FTIR stations at Harestua (Norway) and the Onsala Space Observatory (Sweden), which provide long-term atmospheric composition measurements to the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) and Total Carbon Column Observing network (TCCON). The Onsala station is also part of the European Research infrastructure ACTRIS.

Your Responsibilities

As a Staff Scientist, you are part of a research group where you will provide advanced scientific, technical, and methodological support to strengthen research activities. Key responsibilities include:

Supporting research groups with expert knowledge in methods, techniques, and instrumentsDeveloping and implementing scientific methods and instrumentationContributing to research infrastructures through technical and methodological serviceOperate, maintain and further develop the high-resolution solar FTIR stations at Harestua and Onsala, and associated measurement systemsPerform quality assurance and control of the instruments, including troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and replacement and adjustment of components (e.g., laser replacement and alignment)Process and analyze solar FTIR spectra using the SFIT4 retrieval softwarePrepare, quality-control and archive NDACC data productsDevelop and maintain data-analysis and processing workflowsManage the division's Linux-based computer servers and user accountsContribute to the development and maintenance of international research collaborationsContribute to research publication and reportingContribute to training and teaching in the use of methods and instruments

To qualify for this position, you should have

A doctoral degree in atmospheric science, physics, or a related fieldAdvanced experience with high-resolution solar FTIR spectroscopy and ground-based atmospheric remote-sensing instrumentation. Including the operation (measuring solar spectra) and maintenance of solar FTIR systemProven experience with atmospheric retrieval software, such as SFIT4Programming skills in Python or other relevant languagesExperience in computer management and support of Linux-based serversProficiency in written and spoken English (Swedish language courses are offered.)

The Following Qualifications Are Considered Meritorious

Experience with Bruker 125HR and Bruker 125M instruments. Meritorious skills include Instrumental line shape cell measurements and retrievals (Linefit software), laser replacement and alignment, experience with Norhof liquid nitrogen system, dual-acquisition measurementsExperience with DOAS or MAX-DOAS techniquesExperience with atmospheric chemistry-transport models and/or reanalysis datasets to support data analysesExperience of active collaboration within NDACC or comparable international atmospheric remote-sensing networksExperience from writing research applicationsPeer‑reviewed publications in leading journals
