Lead AI Engineer
Join Sandvik Mining’s digital and AI transformation journey as a Lead AI Engineer in Tampere or Turku, Finland. In this role, you will be in a key role in Sandvik’s AI Center of Excellence and will be shaping their AI roadmap and technologies. You will take technical ownership of end-to-end AI solutions and help shape the platforms, engineering practices, and delivery models that enable AI adoption across the organization. We are looking for an experienced, hands-on AI engineering professional who combines strong technical depth with the ability to lead complex delivery, collaborate with stakeholders, and turn business needs into scalable solutions. This is a lead role that requires broad experience in AI product development and confidence to operate across architecture, engineering, deployment, and stakeholder collaboration. You will use your understanding of internal and external business needs to define technical direction, solve complex problems, and support capability building across teams. The role offers the opportunity to influence enterprise-scale AI adoption while remaining closely involved in practical engineering and delivery. Your mission You will design, build, deploy, and maintain AI and machine learning solutions across the full lifecycle, from data ingestion and model development to integration, production deployment, monitoring, and scaling. You will take technical delivery ownership and platform responsibility, working primarily with Microsoft Azure and Databricks. You will collaborate with stakeholders at different levels to identify business needs, translate them into scalable technical solutions, and support the development of appropriate strategies and roadmaps. You are expected to lead by example through hands-on engineering, strong technical judgment, and a structured, solution-oriented approach. Your responsibilities include guiding end-to-end AI architecture, supporting vendor collaboration, contributing to technical standards, and ensuring that solutions are secure, maintainable, and production-ready. You will also help accelerate AI capabilities across the organization through collaboration, knowledge sharing, mentoring, and practical guidance. We are looking for someone who stays current with developments in machine learning and generative AI and can apply them pragmatically to create measurable business value. Your profile We are looking for a candidate with more than eight years of relevant experience in AI, machine learning, software engineering, or related fields, together with a master’s degree in computer science or another relevant discipline. You should bring strong technical depth, experience with production-grade AI solutions, and the ability to take ownership of complex work from architecture through implementation and operations. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity, working independently, and communicating clearly with both technical and business stakeholders. Hands-on experience designing and building end-to-end AI and machine learning solutions, covering data ingestion, model development, deployment, monitoring, and scaling in productionStrong background in machine learning, generative AI, data structures, and algorithms, with the ability to apply modern AI techniques to real-world systemsAdvanced proficiency in Python for AI, machine learning, and backend developmentDeep experience with Databricks, including PySpark development, data pipelines, and Unity Catalog for data governanceProven expertise with cloud platforms, including architecture, resource provisioning, security, networking, integration, and operational managementExperience deploying and operating robust production systems using for example Azure DevOps, Git-based workflows, version control, CI/CD pipelines, and collaborative engineering practicesAbility to take technical delivery ownership, guide end-to-end AI architecture, collaborate with stakeholders, and manage external vendorsFluent written and spoken English Experience in manufacturing or supply chain environments is considered an advantage. Your analytical and structured mindset, communication skills, and initiative allow you to simplify complex topics, explain technical choices clearly, and take on broader responsibilities as the work evolves.
