At Tampere University, Hervanta Campus includes a unique research infrastructure focused on research and development of autonomous and electrified mobile working machines, with a long history of research in this area and close collaboration with industry both in Finland and Europe. The research groups in this area operates several full-scale mobile working machines equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and computing units, and utilizes a 10000 sq.m. area offroad test area with air-conditioned control room, 5G access, and a large warm workshop for storage and maintenance work. Besides the efficient use of current equipment, the groups aim at maintaining a first class R&D laboratory as technology advances and improving software infrastructure. The aim is to collaborate with other research groups from different faculties of Tampere University, other universities, as well as companies.

The research area is well funded through national and European grants, in basic and applied research. The Research Council of Finland has granted a substantial amount to Tampere University to reinforce the areas of System-on-Chip, Wireless Technology, and Robotics for Intelligent Machines. The present position is open within this research area. Tampere University has very strong scientific track record in these areas, and we expect to boost them to international level and support Finnish high-tech export. The Tampere region has built a unique ecosystem of industry and academy in the area of future mining, construction, forestry, and logistics. Job Description

Staff Scientists are academic personnel who are responsible for specialist activities related to research, providing support to teaching and research staff. The responsibilities of Staff Scientists involve the use and development of research infrastructures and research equipment. Their individual job descriptions are defined in relation to the University’s strategic needs and include teaching, research, and the provision of services.

The primary tasks of the Staff Scientist to be recruited include supporting research in autonomous and electrified mobile machines, maintaining our first-class research infra, and participating in planning and developing the infra further. This in part means promoting and enabling good software and hardware engineering practices and bringing the basic research to higher readiness level for integration into a larger software infra. Furthermore, taking care of safety in the laboratories, performing public demonstrators, and producing public relation material are among the tasks. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work with different groups who research and develop robotics for heavy machines and electrified working machines. Furthermore, the Staff Scientist is expected to participate in bachelor and master’s thesis supervision.

Doctoral degree in robotics, computer science, electrical engineering or related field,Practical experience with robotics, modern computers, and sensing,Experience and expertise in hardware and software engineering and embedded systems, Experience with laboratory research and relevant mobile work machine equipment, Experience with safety in the laboratories and mobile working machines is appreciated, Experience in teaching is appreciated,Good presentation, communication and documentation skills in English.

We offer

The position will be filled on a permanent basis. The appointment is expected to commence as soon as possible, as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job demand and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of Staff Scientist is placed on the job demand level 6. In addition, employees receive performance-based salary. The salary is thus approximately 4500 EUR/month.

Tampereen yliopisto hakee vakituiseen tutkimusympäristöasiantuntijan -tehtävään tukemaan autonomisten ja sähköistettyjen työkoneiden tutkimusta sekä kehittämään ja ylläpitämään alan huipputasoista tutkimusinfrastruktuuria Hervannan kampuksella. Tehtävään kuuluu tutkimuksen tekninen tukeminen, laboratorioiden ja tutkimusympäristöjen kehittäminen, turvallisuudesta huolehtiminen sekä opinnäytetöiden ohjaus.

Hakijalta edellytetään tohtorin tutkintoa soveltuvalta alalta sekä kokemusta robotiikasta, sulautetuista järjestelmistä, ohjelmisto- ja laitteistokehityksestä sekä tutkimuslaboratorioympäristöistä.
