At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we’ll give you what you need to make it happen. It won’t always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you’ll never run alone. Run what runs the world.

This Position reports to

R&D Team Lead

Your Role And Responsibilities

Large AI data centers are among the most power-intensive grid loads today.

Their grid interface, dominated by converters, UPS systems, and batteries, can, following a fault in weak grids, trigger current limiting, voltage sag, or instability during recovery.

Details

Period: January 2027-June 2027, 5 monthsNumber of credits: 30 ECTSNumber of students for this thesis work: 1Location: ABB Corporate Research (Västerås)

The thesis will focus on the post-fault recovery stability of AI data centers in weak grids, examining how UPS converter dynamics, DC-link behavior, battery support, and protection logic affect the system's return to stable operation after grid faults.

Goals

Review state of the art in power-electronic-dominated datacenter grid integration and identify gaps in post-fault recovery understanding.Identify key parameters (grid strength, loading, converter limits, controller tuning, protection settings) that determine safe recovery.Derive a safe post-fault recovery envelope mapping stable vs. unstable operating regions

Qualifications For The Role

This project is designed for 1 student with a strong energy engineering background.

Strong interest in solving emerging real-world problems. Background in power systems, power electronics, or control engineering.Motivation to solve real-world grid integration problems using dynamic modeling and stability analysis.Familiarity with simulation tools (PSCAD, PowerFactory, or MATLAB/Simulink).
