Senior Java Engineer (with Python)

Role Overview

We are looking for a deeply hands-on Senior Java Engineer who can provide technical leadership while continuing to design, build and ship production code. You will work across several backend services rather than being assigned to one isolated project. The environment consists of distributed, cloud-native systems, with Java as the primary language and Python used across parts of the wider platform.

You will collaborate closely with Product Owners, DevOps engineers and other development teams, helping shape technical solutions across multiple services and translating product requirements into scalable backend architecture.

Design, build and maintain scalable backend services and APIs, primarily in JavaWrite production-quality code as a core part of your daily workContribute to Python services and codebases when requiredWork across approximately three to four interconnected microservicesMake and influence technical and architectural decisionsBreak down complex requirements and guide their technical implementationReview code and establish strong engineering standardsMentor engineers and provide technical guidance without formal line-management responsibilityCollaborate with Product Owners to evaluate requirements, trade-offs and delivery approachesBuild and operate cloud-native services, primarily on AWSDeploy and run containerised applications using Kubernetes and DockerWork with DevOps engineers on CI/CD, deployment, scalability and reliabilityUse data, analytics and operational insights to support technical decisionsContribute to testing, documentation and continuous improvement throughout the SDLCSupport the adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools and solutions where appropriate

At least 5 years of professional backend engineering experienceStrong, recent and hands-on commercial experience with JavaProven experience designing and developing microservices or distributed systemsProfessional experience contributing to production Python codebasesStrong knowledge of AWS and cloud-native application architectureSolid hands-on experience with Kubernetes and DockerExperience designing and integrating REST APIsGood knowledge of SQL and relational databasesPractical experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern software-delivery practicesExperience influencing architecture or leading technical decisionsAbility to review code and mentor other engineersStrong understanding of testing, maintainability and production code qualityComfortable working across several services and technical priorities simultaneouslyStrong communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and product stakeholdersProfessional working proficiency in English (C1+)
