At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we’ll give you what you need to make it happen. It won’t always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you’ll never run alone. Run what runs the world.

This Position reports to

R&D Team Lead

Your Role And Responsibilities

Industrial grids are becoming increasingly converter-dominated due to growing adoption of drives, battery storage, and other power electronic technologies.

This coupled with weak grid point-of-connection raises the risk of control interactions and converter-driven oscillations. Currently, stability studies are manual and done case by case.

This thesis explores how AI can automate the workflow, from model setup and scenario sweep to interpreting results and providing control strategies.

This thesis will provide a framework for using AI for performing stability checks and design optimal control strategy for stability assurance of a given Industrial Grid across a range of operating scenarios.

Goals

Develop a source library with relevant standards (IEEE, IEC, etc.), guidelines (CIGRE, system operators, etc.), model bank, and technical reports.Develop scripts for automating the stability analysis (frequency and time-domain) and sweep across dispatch or load profiles.Provide optimal control strategies for varying system conditions to ensure stability margins.

Qualifications For The Role

Background in Electrical Engineering with keen interest in power grids.Knowledge of control systems and interested in applying AI to engineering problems.Good programming skills in MATLAB/Simulink and Python.Familiar with GitHub Copilot.
