Master thesis Predictive Maintenance and Degradation Prognostics

A Snapshot of Your Day

How do we predict aging, from a truck tire or bearing to an aircraft engine or steam turbine? In this master’s thesis, you will investigate how predictive maintenance is moving beyond condition monitoring toward model-driven prediction of degradation, remaining useful life, and maintenance needs.

You will combine academic research with industrial perspectives from Siemens Energy experts in Sweden and Germany. Your work will help create a practical framework for selecting predictive maintenance strategies based on technical, operational, economic, and safety requirements.

How You’ll Make An Impact

Map the state of the art in monitoring, diagnosis, degradation prediction, and prognostics across multiple asset classes and industries.Compare heuristic, analytical, physics-based, statistical, and AI-enabled approaches, including the data and physical quantities they use.Develop comparative case studies covering condition monitoring, data acquisition and processing, anomaly and fault detection, degradation prognostics, and maintenance decision-making.Create a taxonomy that compares maturity, applicability, data requirements, benefits, limitations, and key technology drivers.Translate your findings into a selection framework that explains why different approaches are chosen and when each strategy is most suitable.Present actionable insights to Siemens Energy experts and academic stakeholders.

What You Bring

You are enrolled in a relevant engineering master’s program and are eligible to complete a 30 ECTS thesis during spring 2027.You are currently enrolled in a master’s or Master of Science in Engineering program, or equivalent, in energy engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering and management, or a related field. You have a broad, multidisciplinary interest in engineering systems, maintenance, reliability, data analysis, or related fields. You enjoy structured research and can critically compare academic methods with industrial applications. You communicate confidently in English, both in writing and in discussions with an international team. You are self-driven, comfortable working independently, and able to collaborate effectively in a remote environment.Knowledge of predictive maintenance, condition monitoring, statistics, modeling, or AI is an advantage, but not a requirement.

About The Team

The thesis is conducted in cooperation with Siemens Energy and is intended for two students. You will receive methodological guidance and industrial insights from experts based in Finspång, Sweden, and Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany. The collaboration brings together experience in monitoring, data processing and ageing prognosis for materials, components and machines within the Siemens Energy portfolio.
