Master Thesis - Evaluating Tonal Noise
Background
There are various tonal sounds perceived inside the cab of a truck at different operating conditions, originating from different vehicle components. Some tones are masked by background noise, while others stand out clearly. In some cases, the tones are caused by resonances, whereas in others they are related to orders generated by components such as the engine, tyres, turbochargers, or auxiliary systems.
Objective
The objective of this work is to evaluate different tonality metrics using vehicle recordings. Assess which metrics provide objective measures that best reflect subjective perception.
Scope
The work package includes
Literature review - Assessment of different tonality metrics You will be provided with recordings representing different types of tonal sounds perceived in ICE and BEV vehicles. Evaluating the collected sounds using selected tonality metrics.Planning and conducting listening tests (jury tests) to correlate subjective evaluations with objective metric results.Analyzing the results and identifying the most suitable tonality metrics for different applications.Writing a final report and presenting the results to TRATON.
Education
Masters student with focus on Psychoacoustics, Vehicle Acoustics or Technical acoustics.
Background in signal processing – MATLAB/ Python and interest in sound quality evaluation will be considered a plus.
