Database Administrator

You are looking for a Senior PostgreSQL Database Engineer / PostgreSQL DBA whose key specialization is Oracle-to-PostgreSQL migration. This is not an AWS-focused role. The primary technology and correct label should be PostgreSQL / Database Engineering. The ideal candidate is not just a database administrator. They need to be able to execute migrations hands-on, understand the differences between Oracle and PostgreSQL, and assess whether the resulting PostgreSQL environment is properly designed, stable, and performant. The role is approximately 80% hands-on Oracle → PostgreSQL migration and 20% PostgreSQL review, optimization, and recommendations. What he will do: The candidate will work on migrating existing Oracle database services to PostgreSQL.Their responsibilities will include schema conversion, datatype mapping, ensuring functional compatibility, reviewing indexing strategies, PostgreSQL configuration, query performance, and performance tuning.They will also work closely with application/development teams to translate application requirements into appropriate PostgreSQL database designs.An important point: PL/SQL-to-PL/pgSQL code conversion is NOT part of the assignment, as the applications do not contain PL/SQL code. However, the candidate should still understand the differences between Oracle and PostgreSQL. What is the project about? This is a large-scale database modernization and migration project, specifically: Oracle → PostgreSQLThe goal is not simply to move the databases. The client wants to ensure that the PostgreSQL environment after migration is stable, correctly designed, reliable, and performant.The consultant will also document migration learnings, best practices, and repeatable processes that can be used in future database modernization initiatives.There is some broader application/integration context involving Java, Kafka, and Solace, but these are secondary technologies rather than the main focus of the role.Must have skillsThe most important combination is strong hands-on PostgreSQL expertise + proven Oracle → PostgreSQL migration experience. The candidate should have: Extensive production experience with PostgreSQL, ideally as a PostgreSQL DBA, Database Engineer, or PostgreSQL Developer.Proven hands-on Oracle → PostgreSQL migration experience — I would treat this as one of the main knockout criteria.Strong PostgreSQL knowledge covering internals, indexing, query planning, performance tuning, monitoring, and operational reliability.Good knowledge of Oracle and the differences between Oracle and PostgreSQL.Experience with datatype mapping, schema conversion, functional equivalence, and performance adaptation.Ability to review and optimize PostgreSQL schemas, indexes, queries, and configurations.Ability to work autonomously within an established migration framework.Experience with Liquibase or a similar database schema versioning/change management tool.Strong communication and collaboration skills when working with development and database engineering teams.Nice to have skillsAdditional advantages include: Experience with Java applications using PostgreSQL.Experience with Kafka or Solace.Exposure to distributed systems / event-driven architectures.Experience migrating high-traffic database services with low-downtime requirements.Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor or Claude agents. These should not outweigh genuine Oracle → PostgreSQL migration experience.
