Senior Firmware Engineers – Storage Controllers - PCIe/NVMe - NAND/Flash Layer/Memory - Multiple Positions Type: Freelance Location: Hybrid working from multiple locations in Europe The Opportunities We are hiring experienced Firmware Engineers for two separate positions within a specialist storage-controller development team working on NAND, PCIe and NVMe technologies. This is part of a full team build project for a global semiconductor customer. Role 1: Flash Layer Firmware Engineer focused on raw NAND interfaces, flash bring-up, characterisation and hardware abstraction.Role 2: PCIe/NVMe Firmware Engineer focused on storage-controller firmware, PCIe/NVMe protocols, low-level drivers and performance optimisation. Both roles are hands-on and involve close collaboration with hardware and validation teams. Role 1 – Flash Layer Firmware EngineerOwn the raw NAND interface and device abstraction layer at the foundation of the controller firmware stack, covering NAND protocols, device bring-up, characterisation and calibration. Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop NAND firmware supporting ONFI 4.x/5.x and Toggle ModeImplement command sets, timing calibration and multi-die/multi-plane operationLead bring-up and qualification of new NAND vendors and generationsCharacterise retention, disturb, Vth shifts, inter-cell interference and P/E-cycle effectsDebug flash issues using logic analysers and protocol analysersSupport FPGA prototyping and EVT/DVT/PVT validation Ideal BackgroundStrong embedded C firmware experienceDeep knowledge of NAND architecture and flash technologyUnderstanding of NAND reliability mechanismsPython experience for automation and data analysisExperience with multiple NAND vendors is highly desirable Role 2 – PCIe/NVMe Firmware EngineerOwn firmware modules for PCIe/NVMe storage controllers, working across low-level drivers, hardware abstraction, performance optimisation and standards compliance. Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop and maintain PCIe/NVMe controller firmwareDesign and own low-level drivers, HALs and performance-critical subsystemsDebug hardware/firmware issues using JTAG, logic analysers and protocol analysersSupport hardware bring-up, FPGA platforms and EVT/DVT prototypesEnsure compliance with NVMe, PCIe and related standards Ideal BackgroundStrong embedded C firmware experienceSolid understanding of PCIe and NVMeKnowledge of storage internals, flash management, wear levelling and ECCFamiliarity with ARM and/or RISC-VExperience with GCC/LLVM, Git and JTAG debugging Valuable Across Both RolesNAND flash, FTL or ECC/LDPC/BCHSecurity firmware, Secure Boot or HSM integrationHardware bring-up and FPGA developmentEnglish speaking If you are a skilled Firmware Engineer with experience with NAND/Memory or PCIe/NVMe please apply immediately.
